Jane Hammett

Copy-editor and Proofreader

Services I offer

My regular publishing clients include Bonnier Zaffre, Schofield & Sims, Parragon Books, Hot Key Books, Curious Fox and Little, Brown. I also count various businesses and independent authors among my repeat clients.

I offer:

  • copy-editing (on-screen or on hard copy, in Microsoft Word using Track Changes and Comments, or on PDFs).
  • proofreading (using the British Standards Institution (BSI) mark-up symbols, blind or against copy, on hard copy or on-screen).
  • website proofreading: spelling mistakes ‘cost millions’ in online sales, so it’s definitely worth having your website proofread. Website proofreading includes ensuring that text is written appropriately for a web audience; checking the appearance and layout of the web page; making sure that all links work and that text flows; and ensuring clarity and consistency, as well as perfecting grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • the Anglicisation of texts (from US to UK English).

Does my project need to be copy-edited or proofread?

What’s the difference between editing and proofreading? See editing and proofreading guidance on the Society for Editors and Proofreaders website.

Fiction editing

I work with both self-publishing and traditionally published authors, and take pride in helping each one make their work the best it can be.

I enjoy working with writers who want to hone their craft. I offer development editing, copy-editing and proofreading for fiction.

I advise authors on all aspects of their novels, including plot, dialogue, point of view, characterisation and structure.

I specialise in working with businesses to produce clear, clean, error-free copy. I help to make sure that all a business’s communications are written in easy-to-understand English.

I can check websites and all company literature (letters, press releases, blogs, sales/marketing/promotional material) to ensure consistency and a professional finish.
